SAFEPOWER
REDEFINING ENERGY SYSTEM
by developing next-generation Medium-Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) converters
What is the SAFEPOWER project about?
SAFEPOWER is developing the next generation of energy converters to make power systems more efficient, reliable, and sustainable. By investigating key enabling technologies and artificial intelligence, we create smarter solutions that enhance performance, reduce costs, and improve security. Our innovations help to maintain and optimize power systems, ensuring they operate smoothly even in challenging conditions. SAFEPOWER is shaping the future of energy with cutting-edge, sustainable technology.

The research done by the project will be tested and validated by five pilots distributed across three EU-member or associated countries (UK, ES, FR).
SAFEPOWER technological objectives
The project aims to enhance the converter’s overall performance, which includes efficiency, reliability, and power density. The initiative involves the design and manufacturing of two solutions for cost-effective, rugged, and highly efficient power MOSFETs, free-wheeling diodes, and solid-state DC breakers based on Silicon Carbide (SiC) substrates, utilizing both smart-planar and trench technologies. Moreover, new methodologies for Condition and Health Monitoring will be set up, along with new techniques for analyzing power modules and devices.
